An American Tragedy

Tuesday, November 02, 2010

I woke up this morning with two things on my mind.  The first thing is that we are one step closer to yanking that gavel out of Nancy Pelosi‘s hand.  That’s quite an intoxicating thought for me.  Yes, I did say intoxicating. There isn’t a vintage red wine anywhere that could even come close to tasting this good.  But the second thing that came to my mind only serves to underscore the importance of what I believe will be a Republican landslide today. That is the blatent disregard for the voting rights of the American‘s  serving this country far from our boarders by the Department of Justice, or, more accurately, the Department of IN justice.

The Military and Overseas Voter Empowerment Act ( MOVE)  was signed into law in 2009 as an extension to the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act as a means of ensuring that  the voice of the men and women who serve this country be heard at the ballot box.   There are several key provisions of this law, but the one that will impact this midterm election most is the requirement that ballots be sent out no later than 45 days prior to the election.    But as is the case with much “protective” legislation, states were granted the ability to petition for a waiver of those requirements.  Typical.  And requests were filed by states such asHawaiiNew YorkWashington, and Massachusetts to name a few.  So those ballots could very likely not be counted in this election.  In states where the race is close, this will have a significant impact.  And in case you are wondering, military votes tend to heavily favor Republican candidates.  In states such as New York and Massachusetts, this would appear to be the only strategy  that the dirty dems have to hang on to their “hope” of the continued transformation of America.  And for the life of me, I cannot understand why American’s are taking this sitting down.  If our solider’s votes don’t count..why should anyone else’s ?  Tragic.

For Anti abortion movement, there is no compromise

Once upon a time, in a not so far away land, a woman known as "Jane Roe" brought a law suite to the Supreme Court that would forever change the dynamics of America.  Roe V. Wade challenged the constitutionality of the abortion laws in the state of Texas. This challenge to Texas law would later go on to impact every state in the United States.  Abortion, once confined wholly to cases which threatened the life of the mother, would now be available to every woman, regardless of circumstance.  And so began this nations rapid descent down that all too slippery slope.  And at the bottom of that slope we find ourselves, thirty years later with countless children robbed of their right to draw that first breath.  The voice of "Choice" shouting ever insistently over the voice of "Life".  And this battle is still as heated as it was all those years ago.

Recently,  the Catholic University Notre Dame invited President Barack Obama to speak to the 2009 graduating class.  Obama's commitment to the preservation of abortion in America puts him at direct odds with the Catholic church's beliefs, and yet, he was given a prominent platform to down play his commitment to abortion rights.  He spoke eloquently of that mythical place in the middle, that "common ground" that has alluded both sides for so long. Obama explained that "when we open our hearts and our minds to those who may not think like we do or believe what we do - that's when we discover at least the possibility of common ground."  Mr. President, the issue  is quite literally one of life or death.  Where is there "common ground" to be found with those who refuse to acknowledge a child's most basic right- the right to exist.

The one thing that both sides can agree on is that Roe V. Wade has left it's mark on America. Ironically, the woman in the middle of the three year court battle chose not to abort the child that she was carrying. Norma McCorvey gave birth to a healthy baby girl who was subsequently placed for adoption. Norma McCorvey "chose" to give that baby girl life.  From all accounts, it is a decision that she has never regretted.
